Day 5 - Tulsa, Oklahoma to Weatherford, Oklahoma - 199 miles

It is quite chilly when we wake up in Tulsa only 16 or 17 degrees, following an excellent breakfast we head out again.  Route 66 follows the contours of the land as if it has always been there.  We are heading west to Oklahoma City travelling through Oakhurst, Bowden, Sapulpa, Kellyville, Bristow and Chandler.

In Chandler is an amazing museum, originally an 1937 armoury and we get to meet Jerry McClanahan the author of EZ66 Guide.  The armoury gives the true perspective on the American pride in their fallen soldiers.  Unfortunately we manage to drop the bike again on the exit and it unnerves us both.

From Chandler we continue down Route 66 to Oklahoma City.  Unfortunately we were not able to stop off to pay tribute at the Oklahoma Memorial. Lots of traffic lights and lane changes, John's hatred!

Arcadia allows us to see a restored 1898 round barn, and get an insight into the life in the country at that time.
The round barn was built originally to overcome tornado's, but was so difficult to manage that it became a local community centre with dances taking place on the upper level every week.  They continue today.

An interesting netty
We continue on through vast fields with outstanding flour mills beside the railway track.  The song from Oklahoma really does ring in your ears whilst going past.

Through to El Reno with more images of a forgotten past with odd signs and derelict buildings.  We cross over the Mile-Long bridge.

The next section of the road is Hydro, running on the original laid 1926 concrete road with pristine curbed edges (fascinatingly all laid at one go).  It is a real bone cruncher with the bumps.

We end the day in Weatherford after a lot of visits and a lot of miles.  Once again looking at our own reasons for doing the "mother road", but equally thinking back to the originally journey men and recognising that this is the heart and soul of route 66 country.
